Ross Anthony has a wide range of interests. The Los Angeles-based author, illustrator and videographer has published three novels and two nonfiction travelogues, including one about the time he rode a dirt bike called Chili across the country. He’s penned a young-adult trilogy and a children’s book that was translated into eight languages.

He also reviews movies on his blog, Hollywood Report Card, and recently he wrote about his thoughts on PUMP the movie.

Here’s an excerpt:

… I’ve driven hybrids, and I even know a thing or two about combustion engines — but I didn’t know what the term “Flex Fuels” meant — until I saw this doc. Thankfully, the doc is familiar with this unfortunately common obliviousness and doesn’t make viewers feel bad when it reveals that the cars we are driving right now, may very well be Flex-Fuel-ready.

The documentary has provoked similar a-ha reactions among the people who’ve seen it. The vast majority of Americans don’t know that the early cars were built to run on ethanol; that modern car engines actually perform better on alcohol fuels like ethanol and methanol, compared with gasoline; and that many vehicles made in the past decade can run on alternative fuels with a simple software update.

PUMP opened in theaters in September and is now getting a strong second wind with its release on iTunes next Tuesday, Jan. 13. You can download it to keep or view it as a one-time rental.
